First Provisional Licence

  • You can hold a provisional licence from 17 years of age.
  • In some cases you can hold a provisional licence from 16 years of age. (see www.direct.gov.uk for details).
  • You can apply online or download the D1 application form at www.direct.gov.uk
  • D1 forms are also available at all main post offices.
  • Return completed form with all relevant original documents, a signed passport photo & correct fee to the DVLA. (see leaflet INF1D for all relevant documents & who is eligible to sign your photograph).
  • You must be in possession of your provisional licence before taking any driving tuition.

Eyesight test

  • These are the minimum distances you must be able to read a car number plate.
  • Old style number plate: 20.5 metres.
  • New style number plate: 20 metres.
  • If you have any doubts about your eyesight, please have an eyesight test before booking any lessons.

Theory & Hazard Perception Tests

  • The Theory test is conducted on a touch screen computer.
  • It consists of 50 multiples choice questions, covering all aspects of driving,
    some questions may have more than 1 correct answer.
  • To pass you must answer a minimum of 43 out of 50 correctly in just under 1 hour.
  • The Hazard Perception test consists of 14 video clips lasting approximately 1 minute each.
  • 13 of these clips have 1 scoring hazard, with the other clip having 2 scoring hazards.
  • You can score up to a maximum of 5 points per hazard.
  • To pass you must score a minimum of 44 out of 75.
  • Both test must be taken & passed on the same day.

The Driving Test

  • The test will begin with the examiner meeting you in the waiting room.
  • Here they will check all you documents are in order, you will need both parts of your licence, theory pass certificate & your confirmation letter.
  • Next you will be asked to sign the DL 25 driving test marking form & asked if you would like your instructor to accompany you on test & or be present for your result at the end of your test.
  • You will then be asked to read a number plate to ensure your eyesight meets the minimum legal requirements.
  • The next step is for the examiner to ask you 2 safety questions with regard to your vehicle.
  • The driving part of the test lasts around 40 minutes, covering a variety of road & traffic conditions. During the test you will be asked to drive independently for 10 minutes following road signs & or a set of directions. You will need to carry out 1 set of reversing manoeuvres & possibly an emergency stop.
  • At the end of the test the examiner will give you a debrief & tell you the result of the test.

* Test fees do not include the cost of the 1 Hour lesson before the test, or the hire of your Jigsaw Instructors car for the purpose of the test. All additional fees must be paid to your Jigsaw Instructor on or before the day of the test.
